J.D. Avery, Undertaker

Mr. J.D. Avery (John D. Avery), began re-enacting in the summer of 1998.  He began as a private in the 8th. Missouri Regiment, Volunteer Infantry, U.S.  Upon purchasing and restoring an 1860's horse drawn hearse, Mr. Avery developed a persona of a Civil War Undertaker.  In real life Mr. Avery is a Licensed Funeral Director in the State of Missouri.  He brings to his impression an understanding of funeral rituals and practices, both historic and present day.  There is little information written about the Civil War Embalming Surgeon and Undertaker.  However, the instruments and paraphernalia are as period correct as can be determined from photographs and what little has been written on the subject.
Mr. Avery is a historian and former teacher with a special interest in the Civil War.  His family has at least three ancestors who served in Michigan Regiments, both infantry and cavalry.  One served in the Iron Brigade under General Custer and another was imprisoned for a short time in the infamous Andersonville Prison.

Mrs. Charles Avery, Widow

Mrs. Charles Avery (Peggie Avery), began re-enacting with her husband, John in the summer of 1998.  As  Mr. Avery took on the persona of a Civil War Era Undertaker, she assumed the role of a Lady in Mourning of the same Era.  The costumes and mannerisms are an accurate portrayal of an 1860's War Widow.  Mrs. Avery is a former elementary teacher and has studied the life and times of the Civil War Era Widow in various stages of mourning.

J.D. Avery, Undertaker  &  Mrs. Charles Avery, Widow

Both Mr. & Mrs. Avery are available for living history presentations for schools, community groups and re-enactments.  The spectators will witness an accurate presentation of an undertaker near the field or in his undertaking establishment.  The paraphernalia that Mr. Avery uses would have been used during the very early years of the profession.  If desired, the presentation can include having the 1860's restored hearse present (horse not provided).
